The Mourning Dove by Larry Barkdull is a short little book that could be read in a couple of hours. It's a well thought out story going on the vein of Laddie or Little Britches. A young child, 8,9 could really enjoy it and discuss the themes.
It's a right/wrong tale about a little boy who was orphaned and brought to live with His Grandpa. Reading about the Grandpa made me want to be a better parent and friend of children. A wonderful example of long suffering and service. Each chapter presents a moral lesson. The lessons are pretty blatant and even a little preachy at times, but the charm of the story overrides the lack of subtlety.
I would recommend the book for early youth. It would be great to read coming out of Core phase.
